Creating A Succesful Personal Training Business Part 2: Creating Your Vision

Creating your Vision

This journey is going to be a lot of effort; that I can guarantee. So not only do you need to know yourself, so you can optimally handle all hurdles thrown your way, but you need to have a clear defining vision of why you’re putting yourself through this very challenging situation. Without one, you run the very real risk of becoming demotivated, burned out,  and give up. This is fine if you feel called to a different career, but that’s not what this article is about.

Every impossible manifestation started as a dream. Reality doesn’t manifest itself on its own. Steve Jobs first presented his vision for the Ipad 18 years before it became a reality. 100 years ago, bacterial diseases were the most common cause of mortality, the biology of bacteria was a mystery, it may as well have been caused by ghosts, but just like the Ipad, the vision was still there. The only way for humankind to progress and advance is through a vision for the future. I know we’re all glad we don’t commute via horse and buggy; more somberly I know we’re all glad human homicide has decreased massively. We are a species with consistent positive growth in mind. Capitalism is the economic and societal manifestation of consistent growth, no matter the bumps and bruises you get on the way up to the top..

What's your life philosophy

First, you need to calm yourself down. We know peak performance lies on a bell curve from 1-10. On either side of the curve, you’re either too energized or not energized enough. We want to be at a 5 for this exercise. Although some research on the topic is showing any anxiety is bad anxiety, but we’ll keep both those topics in mind.

If you’re too amped up, let’s say between a 7 to 10: excessively anxious, racing thoughts,  jittery, sweating, fast heart rate, physiologically fight or flight, you need to calm yourself down

Mindfulness training

  1. Start by closing your eyes, sitting tall with your feet on the floor

  2. Breathe in through your nose for 3-5 seconds

  3. Hold at the top for 1 second

  4. Let it out the nose for 5-7 seconds

  5. Hold at the bottom for 1 second

  6. Repeat for at 8-20 minutes

Every time your mind wanders, observe what kind of thought it is. Is it negative self-talk? Are you problem-solving? Are you analyzing? Regardless, bring your attention back to the breath and really start to enjoy the exhale. After doing this you will be in a good state to see your vision clearly

For 1-4: excessively fatigued, apathetic, disinterested,

  1. Figure out your mantras

Mantras are short sayings, one to two sentences that embody you as a person; the shorter the better. What do you say to yourself before you’re about to do something great? It can be one word or it can be a couple. For me, I like to say “Look at where you’ve come from and all you’ve accomplished” and “ Let’s Go!”. Repeating these words in your head, or even out loud, will raise your physiological state and get you into a pumped-up and more energized state of mind.

  1. Repeat those mantras to yourself and feel yourself start to become invigorated

  2. Add some music that gets you pumped

  3. Drink some coffee 30 minutes beforehand if you’re feeling especially low energy

Now that you’re in the right state of mind for optimal performance it's time to flex your psychological muscles. For your vision, let’s not focus on details; we’re big picture thinking right now.

What is your vision for your life? Write down where you see yourself in 5 to 10 to 15 years? Don’t hold anything back, and don’t listen to negative self-talk. Every vision was thought of as impossible initially. With enough time, any vision can become reality.

How do you get there? Write down a couple of steps in numerical order that need to happen for you to manifest your dreams. Some people may find working backward to be very effective at creating their game plan for manifesting their vision.
